About the Voyager Golden Record

In 1977, NASA launched the Voyager 1 and Voyager 2 spacecraft to explore the outer solar system and eventually interstellar space. Each Voyager carries a Golden Record — a 12-inch gold-plated copper disc containing sounds and images selected to portray the diversity of life and culture on Earth.

The record includes greetings in 55 different languages, music from various cultures and eras, natural Earth sounds, and encoded images. It was designed to communicate the story of our world to any extraterrestrials who might find it in the distant future.

This project, Guess Language, uses some of the spoken greetings from the Golden Record and challenges you to recognize the language being spoken. It’s a fun way to explore the cultural tapestry represented in this historic artifact.
